Moulin Rouge

When talking about the city of Paris and cabaret in particular, one place always springs to mind: The Moulin Rouge. It is without a shadow of a doubt the most famous in the world even comparable to the Eiffel Tower as a Parisian attraction.

It was built in 1889 by Josep Oller and Charles Zidler in the district of Pigalle, a red light area at the foot of Montmartre. Ever since, it has been at the centre of Parisian nightlife. From the outside, it resembles a huge windmill with rotating blades and has been the home to such artists like Liza Minelli, Frank Sinatra, Edith Piaf, Ginger Rogers and Yves Montand. If there is anyone who stood out and made their mark concerning the Moulin Rouge it would have to be Celeste Mogador, creator of the famous Quadrille.

At this time the Montmartre district was very fashionable, but prostitutes and the like used to meet there. The Moulin Rouge soon became a sumptuous salon frequented by the aristocracy. Today though, it is one stop that is a must for many of the thousands of tourists who travel to Paris yearly.

In its early days it was a shrine for opera and a dance hall and over the years it became one of the first places where striptease was allowed much to the astonishment of all present. Currently it offers a number of variety shows involving around 100 artists (60 of them are the famous "Doriss Girls" - the legendary Moulin Rouge dancers). It also offers an excellent menu if you choose to dine at the Moulin Rouge.

The post-impressionist painter Toulouse-Lautrec also used the famous cabaret as a great source of inspiration for many of his works. It was also the title of a book that would give origin to the movie with the same name filmed in 1952 and which starred José Ferrer and Zsa Gabor and in 2001, a new film/musical was inspired and called Moulin Rouge, this time with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor as the main stars of the film.

Taking in the Moulin Rouge on your Paris trip would set you back around 100 € to see the show, and between 140 and 170 € for both dinner and a show. Are you excited at this prospect? Would you like to go to the world famous cabaret? Why not rent some of the best apartments in Paris and discover its magic?

A Visitors Guide To The Moulin Rouge In Paris, France

Moulin Rouge, which translates into English as Red Windmill, is a world-famous cabaret. It has been featured in both musicals and movies. It is located in the Paris red-light district of Pigalle and was built in the late 1800s. The reason for its name is the huge red windmill located on its roof. This is a landmark that the cabaret has also become famous for.

The sheer grandeur of the size and architecture within will take your breath away. Moulin Rouge embraces decadence in the most classic way possible. Its interior is decorated with heavy drapes in the richest of colours, trimmed with gold fringes, and golden statues and carvings. The stage is huge and the sets used for performances breathtaking as well as gravity-defying. And this is just talking about the layout!

The Moulin Rouge offers musical performances for mainly adult visitors, and has featured many popular artistes such as Frank Sinatra and Edith Piaf in the course of its long and colourful history. The traditional French can-can is frequently performed in the Moulin Rouge. This is a seductive dance that incorporates gymnastic and acrobatic moves. Although the can-can is performed in many places all over France, it is said the quality of the can-can performance in the Moulin Rouge is unsurpassed.

It is not just the can-can performance that will entrance you at the Moulin Rouge. Their colourful, fast-paced cabaret shows with elaborate costumes and tantalizing personalities will make the price you paid for their tickets more than worth it. Time will fly by and the end of the performance will leave you wanting me. Truly, there is nothing like a show at the Moulin Rouge.

The Moulin Rouge has embraced a progressive attitude. Today it is a completely non-smoking area (with the exception of certain sections) and reservations for tickets can be booked online through its website. It has also catered some shows that are suitable for children, who are entitled to fifty percent off tickets. This is done in an effort to attract a more diverse crowd.

The cabaret is so popular that their souvenir shop is hugely successful. Most visitors who go for the performances make it a point to bring home with them one or more of the sixty different personalized Moulin Rouge souvenirs that are available at the cabaret itself and also online. The souvenirs include postcards, notebooks, t-shirts, umbrellas and even jewels. Just browsing through the souvenir shop is an experience on its own. So remember, the next time you are in Paris, make it a point to drop by the Moulin Rouge. I promise it will be an experience you will never forget.
